Beaufort College
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beaufort College was a preparatory school and college in Beaufort, South Carolina. It was founded in 1795 to serve the families of local planters.
The college was annexed to the University of South Carolina System in 1959. While the school is now officially the University of South Carolina Beaufort (or USCB), many people still refer to the old name. For several decades after annexation, Beaufort operated as a junior college, and still primarily offers Associate degrees. Beaufort serves around 1,200 students on four campuses, all located in Beaufort County, South Carolina. In 2002 it was extended to again be a four year college, and awards baccalaureate degrees in human services, hospitality management, English, psychology, biology, Spanish, history, liberal studies, early childhood education, and business administration. In 2004, USCB opened the South Campus, fifteen minutes from the bridge to Hilton Head Island. At the South Campus, USCB has the Hargray Building, Science Lab building and a state of the art library. In the fall 2005, on campus student apartments were opened for students seeking a residential experience. USCB is the fastest growing campus of the University of South Carolina.
USCB offers intermural sports for students and is working on a plan to bring NCAA competitive athletics as soon as practical.
