Bengoechea is a common surname in the Basque country of Spain. It is common in cities such as: Murelaga, Lizarza, Alkitza, Aizarna, Aulestia, Igeldo (Donostia, San Sebastian), Oiartzun, Aia, Olaberria, Lazkano, Berrobi (Tolosa), Zizurkil (Guipuzcoa), Valley of Orozko, Mungia, Santo Tomás de Olabarrieta (Zeberio), Mundaka, Galdakano (Biscay) and in Arrieta and Baranbio (Alava).

Derivative of Bengoetxea or Bengoeche the name litterally means (house of more down). It comes from "been" superlative of "be" (inferior part) and "etxe" (house). It is a variation of Ongaitz, Dongaitz, Engaitz, (gamonal or cacique). As no one knows of its origin and because there are so many different houses. The Bengoechea coat of arms is: In gold, a tree of sinople (green), and crossed to its trunk, two bulls of saber (black).
