Big hunk o' cheese
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Big Hunk O' Cheese was a funk / rock / punk / DIY band originally from Bowling Green, Ohio who later relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina. The band was touring actively from 1988 - 1993 and garnished a large following in the Midwest logging over 500 live shows. Their early sound borrowed from the Hillel Slovak era of The Red Hot Chili Peppers and later grew into a "very heavy riff" band that pre-dated the sound later made popular by Tool (band) & Rage Against the Machine.
They released 2 recordings in the early '90s, one of which, their self-titled debut, made it as high as #146 on the CMJ Top 150 chart, being reported by nearly 100 stations in the Spring of '92. The band held staunchly to a DIY ethic and inspired many younger bands in the area to release their own material & paraphernalia. Two additional releases have come out since their '93 break-up, including the excellent "Live From Hell." Drummer / actor Mike Bove went on to be in the 1st American cast of Stomp (dance troupe) where he also appeared in the film, "Stomp Out Loud" Other members included the sardonic Mark "Ike" Eichner on vocals, Classic car enthusiast / professional Mike Abbsy on bass, Recording engineer & educator Mac "Blackmac" McKeever on Guitar. Abssy & Eichner went on to form Stool (band). McKeever was most recently spotted in the OHIO quartet The T-Shirts (band).
