Binibining Pilipinas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Binibining Pilipinas or Miss Philippines is the most prestigious beauty pageant in the Philippines. Winners of this pageant often go on to compete in one of three international beauty pageants. It is the official Philippine franchise holder of the Miss Universe pageant since 1964, Miss International since 1968, and the Miss World pageant since 1992. One of its main organizers is Maria Stella Márquez Zawadzky (more commonly known as Madame Stella Márquez de Araneta), a former Miss Colombia who was a Miss Universe semi-finalist and the winner of the first Miss International beauty pageant in 1960..
The organization has produced two Miss Universe winners (Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Maria Margarita Moran in 1973) and three Miss International winners (Aurora Pijuan in 1970, Melanie Marquez in 1979, and Precious Lara Quigaman in 2005). Gemma Cruz, winner of Miss International 1964, is a product of the Miss Philippines pageant, the predecessor of the Binibining Pilipinas pageant. The Philippines has yet to produce a Miss World, but have come rather close: four consecutive Binibining Pilipinas-World (2002 to 2005) became semi - finalists and finalist in the past four years.

[edit] Binibining Pilipinas Universe
From 1952 to 1963, the Miss Philippines pageant was held to select the representative of the Philippines to the Miss Universe Pageant. See Philippines representatives to Miss Universe from 1952-1963 for a complete list of Miss Philippines winners prior to 1964.
In 1964, Madame Stella Márquez de Araneta (former Miss Colombia and the very first Miss International winner) started the Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Pageant after acquiring the local franchise for the Miss Universe Pageant. The winner of the Bb. Pilipinas Universe title is the official representative of the Philippines to the Miss Universe Pageant. See Bb. Pilipinas-Universe winners for a complete list of winners from 1964 to the present.
[edit] Binibining Pilipinas World
The Philippines first sent a contestant to the Miss World pageant in 1966. From then to 1976 the Philippine representative to Miss World was chosen through the Miss RP (Miss Republic of the Philippines) pageant. In 1977, franchise was transferred to the Mutya ng Pilipinas (Beauty of the Philippines) pageant which selected the official Philippine delegate until 1991. See Philippines representatives to Miss World from 1966-1991 for a complete list.
In 1992, the Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (organizer of the Binibining Pilipinas Pageant) of Madame Stella Márquez de Araneta acquired the local franchise to choose the Philippine representative to the Miss World Pageant. The local title was renamed to Binibining Pilipinas-World and was added to the two other major beauty titles: Bb. Pilipinas-Universe and Bb. Pilipinas-International respectively. The winner of the Bb. Pilipinas-World is the official representative of the Philippines to the Miss World Pageant. See Bb. Pilipinas-World winners for a complete list of winners from 1992 to the present.
At present the Miss World crown has proven elusive for the Philippines. Its highest placement came in 1973 when Evangeline Pascual placed second. Ruffa Gutierrez placed third in 1993. Carlene Aguilar was predicted a winner in 2005. She was the number one favorite of the bookmakers; she ended up as one of the semi-finalist.
[edit] Binibining Pilipinas International
In 1968, the BPCI acquired the local franchise for the Miss International pageant. The following year, the title Bb. Pilipinas-International was proclaimed together with the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe in one grand Coronation Night, setting the trend for multiple proclamations of beauty titles. See Bb. Pilipinas-International winners for a complete list of winners from 1968 to the present.
For a complete list of Philippines representatives to Miss International prior to 1968, see Philippines representatives to Miss International from 1960-1967.
