Bressay
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bressay ( From Old Norse meaning either 'Broad Island' or 'Brusi's Island') is one of the Shetland Islands (the fifth largest at eleven square miles) in Scotland, with a population of around 400 people. The centre of population on the island is in the middle of the west coast, around Glebe, Fullaburn and Maryfield, from where frequent ro-ro ferries sail to Lerwick on the Shetland Mainland. Also at Maryfield is a heritage centre and the old laird's mansion Gardie House, built in 1724.
Other attractions on the island include nearby Bressay Lighthouse, sea caves and arches, and gun emplacements dating from World War I and II to guard ships in Bressay Sound.
During the summer months, a passenger ferry service links the east coast of Bressay with the uninhabited island of Noss.
[edit] Bressay Transmitting Station
Bressay is also home to the main broadcasting and telecommunications transmission facility for the Shetland Islands. The transmitting station is situated on top of the island's highest peak, the Ward of Bressay, which is 226m above sea level and is located to the south of the island (grid reference HU503387). The station includes two 50m steel lattice towers. It is owned and operated by National Grid Wireless.
