Breton (Elder Scrolls)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bretons are a fictional fantasy race featured in the computer role-playing games of the Elder Scrolls series. They are of mixed human and elven descent and make their home in the province of High Rock. Known for their intelligence and willfullness, they are highly capable mages with high natural magicka resistance. Breton society is loosely based on medieval English and French society, with their names having a french tint to them ("Gaspar Stegine", "Julienne Fanis").
The Bretons' origin can be traced to the First Era of Elder Scrolls history, when the Aldmer attacked and destroyed the Nedic holdings in Skyrim. Many of the female Nords captured in the raids were subsequently enslaved as concubines, and gave birth to mixed Aldmer-Nord offspring, termed Manmer by the pure-blooded Nords. While the Aldmer maintained control of Tamriel, the Manmer lived as lower-class citizens, supporting their meric brethren. After the Aldmer lost their foothold, the remaining Manmer interbred with the controlling human races. The Bretons of modern-day Tamriel have a much-diluted meric ancestry, seen in their higher magical affinity.
[edit] Physical features/anthropology
The Bretons have been mostly known for the fact that they are one of the few races that will keep their head bald, or at least have their hair thinning; most likely a symbol of wisdom (as a reference from Earth), or from stress. Their elven heritage also frequently lends them moderately greater stature than members of other human races.
