Burnley is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Burnley on the Lilydale, Belgrave, Glen Waverley and Alamein railway lines. It is in Metcard Zone 1. Burnley is the junction for the Glen Waverley line.
Burnley is classed as a Host Station, but will be upgraded to a Premium Station as part of the Victorian Government's Public Transport and Liveability statement in May 2006.
The station is used in a number of advertisments for Connex Melbourne including Don't Hold Others Back.
[edit] Location
The station is located at the eastern end of the Burnley Street road overpass and next to Madden Grove. Tram route 70 is a short walk from the station.
[edit] Facilities
The station consists of four platforms, all four in an island format. Platforms 1&2 contains a large brick building, while platforms 3&4 contains a small weatherboard building. Large Metcard machines are located at the entrances to platforms 1&2 and platforms 3&4, which are able to dispense most ticketing options available, and accept notes, coins and electronic swipe card payment from a savings or cheque account. Stabling facilities are located at the DOWN end of the station, adjacent to the Glen Waverley line, whilst a subway is located underneath the station.
Both platforms can be accessed via Burnley Street and Madden Grove. Those unfamiliar with the area should note the presence of a second subway beneath the tracks at the east end of the platforms, level with Stawell Street. This subway merely offers a thoroughfare beneath the tracks and does not actually service the station, as newcomers to the area have learned to their regret when running for their train![1]
[edit] History
Burnley station opened on Saturday, 1st May 1880 as Burnley Street. It was later renamed to Burnley in 1882.
