E/R (referring to the Emergency Room of a hospital) was an American television sitcom that aired in 1984 and 1985. The series was produced by Embassy Television and lasted only a single season. It was developed from a successful play of the same name, and later developed into the current NBC series of the same name.
The show starred Elliott Gould as emergency room doctor Howard Sheinfeld. His colleague Eve Sheridan was played by Marcia Strassman in the pilot, and by Mary McDonnell in the regular series. The cast also included Conchata Ferrell, Jason Alexander, Lynne Moody, Bruce A. Young (one of the writers of the original play), and George Clooney.
The show itself was perhaps most noted for having a theme song deemed catchy and for the Filipino-American secretary's (played by Shuko Akune) manner of stating her catchphrase "Stay back of the white line!" Akune was reprising her role from the original Chicago production of the play. It was Jason Alexander's first TV series.
Reruns were seen on a daily basis for a couple of years on Lifetime, not too long after being canceled by NBC.
E/R (the sitcom) took place in Chicago (as does ER the drama), at the fictitious County General Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. E/R's poor ratings caused the show to be reformatted into a serious drama series in the 1990s. Many of the original actors objected, and were thus replaced. In addition to George Clooney, Mary McDonnell also appeared on many episodes of ER (the drama) as John Carter's mother, Eleanor Carter. She was successful on the show and was nominated for an Emmy award in 2002.
