Everson Griffen is an American football defensive end for the University of Southern California.
Griffen was named the Scout.com National Player of the Year for the class of 2007. Griffen, from Avondale (Az.) Agua Fria Union High School, was also Scout.com's No. 1 prospect overall.
The 6-foot-4, 270-pound Griffen was ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 6 prospect in the nation, the No. 1 defensive end and the highest-rated prospect to ever come out of the state of Arizona.
[edit] High School
He ran a blazing 4.46 forty yard dash at a Scout.com combine in Los Angeles as a high school junior weighing 265 pounds. It was indeed no fluke because SuperPrep Magazine's Allen Wallace said he witnessed Griffen do it twice (run sub 4.5 40-yard dashes). Griffen also bench presses 420, squats 550 and power cleans 335 pounds.
For his senior season Griffen recorded 77 tackles and 16 sacks despite being double and even triple teamed. Offensively, he rushed for 1,251 yards (7.86 yards per carry) and accounted for 22 touchdowns.
At the 2007 Army All-American Bowl, Griffen had the game's first big play. Despite being double-team by offensive tackle Anthony Davis and running back Chris Rainey, Griffen blew through both blocks, sacking the quarterback for an eight-yard loss.
Griffen would continue to see double-teams all day, but he also continued to make plays. The nation's No. 6 rated player recovered a fumble off an errant snap just before halftime. From all reports, Griffen's week in San Antonio was nothing short of spectacular.
Said Rick Kimbrel, the Western Recruiting Analyst for Rivals.com, after watching Griffen toy with the East's offensive linemen, "He's a freakish athlete . . . he does things a coach just can't teach."
Griffen was asked who he would enjoy playing with the most among USC's 2007 recruits.
"Chris Galippo. I just like him a lot. Joe McKnight as well, but I’m taking Galippo because he’s on the defensive side."
[edit] College
His combination of size and quickness is truly unnatural. Nicknamed the "Super Freak", Griffen will likely play strongside defensive end at USC.
