[edit] History
Finjan was founded in 1996 by Shlomo Touboul, who served as its first CEO. In 1998, Shlomo Touboul left the company to set up Runway, a fund specializing in seed-stage start-ups. He was succeeded in 1999 by Bill Lyons, who served as President and CEO. In 2001, Bill Lyons stepped down and was briefly replaced by Phil Kantz. At the request of the Board of Directors, Shlomo Touboul returned to an active management role in 2001 and served as President and CEO until 2005. Asher Polani has been the President and CEO of Finjan since July 2005. He led a strategic reorganization and redirection, which focused the company exclusively on web security.
Finjan’s international operations are based out of offices in North America, Europe, Asia, and an R&D facility in Israel.
[edit] Investors
Finjan is privately owned and its major shareholders include Cisco, Microsoft, Bessemer Venture Partners, Benchmark Capital, HarbourVest Partners and Israel Seed Partners.
[edit] Intellectual property and technology
Finjan invented the concept of proactive content security with its behavior-based content analysis technology. This and other selected technology patents were licensed to Microsoft in July 2005 [1].
Industry experts have cited the need for behavior blocking technology as a complement to signature-based anti-virus solutions:
“You can really think of this as taking the notion of secure-by-default to the next level. The system will truly know what actions are allowed for operating-system components and the applications that are running” - Bill Gates, Chairman & Chief Security Architect, Microsoft – at RSA Conference 2004.
“Traditional signature-based antivirus products can no longer protect companies from malicious code attacks. Vendors must execute product and business strategies to meet the new market requirements for broader malicious code protection" - Gartner, February 2005 Magic Quadrant
IDC referred to Finjan as “the worldwide leader in proactive malicious mobile code detection since 1996” (IDC Worldwide Secure Content Management Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2005).
As of February 2007, Finjan’s intellectual property portfolio includes 20 granted and 24 pending patents in the areas of behavior-based security and digital rights management.
