Foot rating (Dance Dance Revolution)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dance Dance Revolution has used the "foot rating" system in all mixes except DDRMAX. Based on a rating out of 10, the number of "feet" give the player an idea of the difficulty of the song. 1-4 foot songs are easier and are intended for newer players. 5-8 foot songs are more advanced and are intended for experienced players.
Names were given to these foot ratings officially, and they were used to rate song difficulty from 1st Mix through 3rd Mix Plus; starting from 4th Mix and continuing through all current games, numeric ratings are used.
- 1 foot: Simple
- 2 feet: Moderate
- 3 feet: Ordinary
- 4 feet: Superior
- 5 feet: Marvelous
- 6 feet: Genuine
- 7 feet: Paramount
- 8 feet: Exorbitant
- 9 feet: Catastrophic
- 10 feet: Apocalyptic

[edit] Catastrophic (9 footers)
Catastrophic is the term given to any song routine in the Dance Dance Revolution video game series that has a foot-rating of nine. The rating was first seen in Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX with beatmaniaIIDX substream CLUB VERSiON 2. The word was last used officially in Dance Dance Revolution 3rdMIX PLUS, after which all names for the various foot ratings were abolished, but henceforth players would refer to all songs rated nine feet or higher as catas.
The Catastrophic difficulty rating was added because DDR 2nd Mix Club Version 2 had certain songs that were far more difficult than could justify the previous highest rating of eight feet, termed Exorbitant. The songs in question on that mix were GRADIUSIC CYBER, LUV TO ME (disco mix) and ska a go go. The Maniac (later Heavy) steps for all three were given the new higher rating.
Two songs that were rated eight feet before the advent of Catastrophic (DROP OUT from Dance Dance Revolution Solo 2000 and PARANOiA (KCET CLEAN MIX) from Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX) were eventually re-rated nine feet, although many believe the latter song should have remained at eight feet.
[edit] Apocalyptic (10 footers)
Beginning with MAX 300 in DDR MAX, though not labelled as such until DDR MAX2, songs more difficult than the conventional 9-footers have been given a designation of 10 feet. 10-footers are the hardest songs in the game, requiring intense stamina and reading abilities (all except a handful are at least 270 BPM for the majority of play), as well as advanced techniques and the ability to navigate complex rhythms (most notably for bag, whose 65 BPM tempo make the song very difficult to read without scroll speed modifiers). Because naming of the foot ratings ceased after DDR 3rd Mix, ten-footers are often referred to as Catas. There is no special name for a 10-foot song. However, it is believed that 10-foot songs would be given the title of "Apocalyptic." In DDR Ultramix 3, the mission mode has 10 levels, the first nine of which are named after the foot ratings for 1-9 feet songs. The 10th level is named "Apocalyptic", so the name could be applied to 10-foot songs.

[edit] Unrated 10-footers
Starting with Dance Dance Revolution ULTRAMIX 3, many oni charts that lacked an official foot rating were introduced to some songs. The general consensus is that the below songs, though unrated, do have the qualities of an official 10 foot difficulty.
- Giudecca (Dance Dance Revolution ULTRAMIX 3)
- Grandolin (Dance Dance Revolution ULTRAMIX 4)
- Stompin at the Gotham (Dance Dance Revolution ULTRAMIX 4)
- MAXIMIZER (Dance Dance Revolution Universe)
- Return of the Toe Jam (Dance Dance Revolution Universe)
- Tsugaru (OR-IF-IS Mix) (Dance Dance Revolution Universe)
[edit] Disney 10-footers
The following 3 songs are listed as 10 feet in Dance Dance Revolution Disney's Rave, but because of the more liberal rating scale used in that game due to a younger target audience, most players consider them much less difficult than conventional 10-footers:
- It's A Small World (Ducking Hardcore MIX)
- It's A Small World (Ducking Hardcore MIX) (Standard Double)
- Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
- Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (Standard Double)
- Twilight Zone (Double mode only)
[edit] Beta 10-footers
The following songs were listed as 10 footers in beta testings only:
- So Deep (Perfect Sphere Mix) (DDRMAX2: Dance Dance Revolution 7thMIX)
- Mugen (Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA)
Whether it was a mistake to list the song as a 10 footer or the song originally was intended to be a 10 footer, the above two songs have been dropped in difficulty. Mugen was dropped to an 8 footer, while So Deep (Perfect Sphere Mix) was dropped to a 9 footer. So Deep (Perfect Sphere Mix) is sometimes considered one of the hardest 9 footers by players.
[edit] Flashing 10-footers
In addition to being 10-footers, the following 12 songs are listed as "flashing" 10-footers. The flashing refers to a level of difficulty that often exceeds those of other 10-footers.
- The legend of MAX
- Paranoia Survivor (Only in Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 2)
- Paranoia Survivor Max
- Paranoia Survivor Max (Oni Steps)
- Max.(period)
- Max.(period) (Oni Steps)
- Fascination MaxX
- Fascination MaxX (Oni Steps)
- Healing-D-Vision (Oni Steps)
- Fascination ~eternal love mix~ (Oni Steps)
- Max 300 (Super-Max-Me Mix) (Only in Dance Dance Revolution STR!KE)
- Max 300 (Super-Max-Me Mix) (Oni Steps)
[edit] Unrated songs
In DDRMAX, foot ratings were eliminated entirely and replaced with the Groove Radar. Since then, most songs have been given foot ratings, but a few have remained unrated. Bye Bye Baby Balloon and Ghosts (Vincent De Moor Original Mix) were not featured in any arcade games and remained unrated for quite a while, but they have been given foot ratings for their respective inclusion in Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 3 for XBOX and DDRMAX2: Dance Dance Revolution for Playstation2, released in North America. Flash in the Night and Follow Me have not been in any arcade or home versions since DDRMAX, so these songs currently have no official foot ratings.
