The Ford Mondeo was launched in 1993 as replacement for the ageing Sierra. It was marketed as a 'world car' and was badged in America as the Ford Contour.

The Sierra was the last car of its size to retain the old fashioned rear-wheel drive chassis. With the Mondeo, Ford finally made the transition to front-wheel drive. It also launched an entirely new range of engines.

The 1.8 turbo-diesel was noisy and unrefined, but the 16-valve petrol engines were a benchmark for refinement - available in 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 guises. A 2.5 V6 24-valve capable of 140mph followed in 1994.

The Mondeo soon became one of the best selling cars in the UK, and was in more demand than any other company car.

To make sure that customers would not turn their back in favour of the Vauxhall Vectra and Peugeot 406, Ford facelifted the Mondeo in 1996 and re-designed the seats to improve interior space. The engines were also improved to give better refinement.

An all-new Mondeo was launched at the end of 2000. It had a more upmarket, quality feel and was once again top of its class. The 1.6 engine was dropped, while the 1.8 and 2.0 four-cylinder units were updated. The 2.5 V6 continued unchanged, and there was an all-new 2.0 turbo-diesel which was a big improvement over the crude oil-burners which were available on the old Mondeo. A 3.0 V6 from the Jaguar S-Type was later added to the Mondeo range.

The Mondeo nameplate has now been around for 11 years, and in its three different guises has been a best-seller since day one.

[edit] FORD MONDEO

The Ford Mondeo was first launched in February 1993 as replacement for the rear-drive Sierra.

The Mondeo was Ford's world car and was also sold in the USA is the Contour. It had front wheel drive and the choice of either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.

Petrol engines were all initially four-cylinder, 16-valve units - 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0. They were impressively refined and gave good performance. The 1.8 turbo-diesel was less impressive and not up to the standards of the Peugeot 405 in terms of refinement. Bodystyles were five-door hatchback, four-door saloon and five-door estate.

In 1994, a 2.5 V6 Mondeo capable of 140mph was added to the range. Four-wheel drive was also an option on 2.0 and 2.5 Mondeos.

1996 saw the Mondeo get a major facelift and a redesigned interior which gave better space and comfort. At this time, the four-wheel drive versions were dropped.

In December 2000, an all-new Mondeo was launched. It was an all-round improvement in terms of style, refinement, quality and drive appeal. The engine line-up was familiar, with 1.8 and 2.0 16-valve and 2.5 V6 petrol engines. The new 2.0 TDCi diesel engine was all-new and a massive improvement on the crude oil burners previously used.

2003 saw the addition of a 3.0 V6 from the Jaguar S Type to the Mondeo range and a new grille fitted.

The Mondeo is due for a replacement in three years' time but is still easily the best car in its class.

[edit] Trim levels

I have added the trim levels but the formatting is messed up, can anyone fix it? --Sunfazer (talk) 14:37, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Size

I see the intro states the Ford Mondeo is a "large family sedan" whereas the class classification is under midsize. There is a contradiction. 24.57.131.188 22:19, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pop Culture

The pop culture section suggests Tony Blair talked to a Ford Mondeo owning constituant during campaining in 1992. The constituant cannot have owned a Ford Mondeo as they were not released until Aug 1993 (in the UK).
