Freight company
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freight companies are companies that specialise in the moving of freight, or cargo, from one place to another. They are divided into several sections, International Freight Forwarders - which ship goods from country to coutry or Domestic Freight Forwarders (who ship goods within one country).
There are various methods of shipping goods, air, road, sea, rail. Some companies offer multi-modal solutions, this means that they offer more than one service, in many cases Air and Sea and in some cases Air, Sea and Road.
There are thousands of freight companies in the world, many of which are members of certain organisations, such as IATA (International Aviation Transport Association), BIFA (British International Freight Association), FTA (Freight Transport Association) and various or other regional organisations.
The most famous and popular companies are United Parcel Service, DHL and FedEx. Some freight companies specialise in certain goods, for example, Activair are the world's largest freight forwarder when it comes to the book industry.
Courier companies are a spin-off from freight forwarders. There are various types of courier companies, such as airfreight courier companies (FedEx, Skynet, Crossflight) or road couriers (Circle Express).
