GAIS is a Swedish football club based in Gothenburg. Using the method of referring to other Swedish clubs, GAIS would be read out as Göteborgs AIS, but this form is never used, and the full name of the club is also very seldom seen. The club, formed on 11 March 1894, has won four national championship titles and one national cup title. They are currently playing in the highest Swedish league, Allsvenskan. The club is considered a yo yo club, constantly going up and down through the league system.

[edit] History
GAIS was founded 11 March 1894 at Ehdlunds Café, a café in the city centre. The founders had created the club in "patriotic purposes and to promote all kinds of sports". The main activities were athletics and different kinds of strength sports, football was not played organized until 1897, and the first "official match" was played against local rivals Örgryte IS in 1903. GAIS first appearance in the highest league at the time, Svenska Serien was in 1915–16, when they finished fourth. In 1919 the club won its first national championship beating Djurgårdens IF away in the finals. The same procedure would be repeated in 1922, this time against another Stockholm team, Hammarby IF.
The club won the first season of Allsvenskan in 1924-25, two points ahead of local rivals IFK Göteborg. The feat was to be repeated in 1926-27, this time three points ahead of IFK Göteborg. Unfortunately, winners of allsvenskan didn't get recognised as Swedish Champions in the 1920's, but this was changed in 1930-31. GAIS won this year as well, six points ahead of AIK and IFK Göteborg.
During the 30's and 40's, GAIS mostly remained a top team in allsvenskan, except for three years in the second division from 1938-39 until 1940-41. In 1942 the club won Svenska Cupen for the first time.
2006 was the season, when GAIS returned to Allsvenskan from many years in the lower series. One of their most memorable victories of the season was beating Djurgårdens IF 2-0 away at Stockholms Stadion.
