Galaxy 25
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Galaxy 25 (G-25), formerly known as Intelsat Americas 5 (IA-5) (formerly Telstar 5) is a medium-powered communications satellite in the Clarke orbit at 97 degrees west, above a point in the Pacific Ocean several hundred miles west of the Galapagos Islands. It was manufactured by Space Systems/Loral, part of its FS-1300 line, and is currently owned and operated by Intelsat. The satellite's main C-band transponder cluster covers the United States, southern and central Canada, and northern Mexico; its main Ku-band transponder cluster covers the U.S., Mexico, and the northern Caribbean Sea. An additional C-band and a Ku-band transponder pair targets the Hawaiian Islands.
Galaxy 25, launched in 1997 with a design life of 12 years, is scheduled to be replaced in late 2007 by Galaxy 19 (formerly IA-9).[1]
Galaxy 25 transmits both free-to-air (FTA) direct-to-home broadcasting and encrypted subscription channels. Its FTA channels include Christian-based stations in several languages, including The Church Channel, God's Learning Channel, Daystar, JCTV, Smile of a Child, TBN Enlace, CNL, RBN, AlKarma, Miracle Channel, TCT and Trinity Broadcasting Network, secular English language channel Gameznflix, and several international broadcasters, especially from the Middle East, including Abu Dhabi TV, Al-Iraqiya, Al Jazeera, BVN, Thai Global Network, and TV Romania International, as well as a large number of Persian-language broadcasters, principally operating out of the United States, often from the Los Angeles area. The service also broadcasts business audio programming from Music Choice.
The Ku-band side of the satellite currently carries the platforms of Pittsburgh International Telecommunications, Inc, GlobeCast World TV, Glorystar, RRSat, ABS-CBN, and ETTV America, with free-to-air and encrypted television and radio programming in a variety of languages:
