Garrett is a city in DeKalb County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,760 at the 2005 census. Founded in 1875, Garrett was named for John W. Garrett (1820-1884), president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from 1858 to 1884.

Garrett is located at 41°20′52″N, 85°8′1″W (41.347903, -85.133700)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²), all land.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 5,803 people, 2,185 households, and 1,516 families residing in the city. The population density was 715.8/km² (1,856.5/mi²). There were 2,364 housing units at an average density of 291.6/km² (756.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.47% White, 0.29% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.07% of the population.

There were 2,185 households out of which 36.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% were non-families. 25.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.15.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males.the

The median income for a household in the city was $41,747, and the median income for a family was $48,403. Males had a median income of $35,814 versus $22,389 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,260. About 4.1% of families and 6.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.0% of those under age 18 and 11.7% of those age 65 or over.

The city of Garrett lies in the school district of Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community Schools. Local schools are:

[edit] Important Buildings

The Sacred Heart Apartments, once the Sacred Heart Hospital, was renovated in December of 2003. The Hospital was a historic landmark in Garrett dating back to 1902. In danger of being torn down because the hospital was closed, there was planning to turn the old hospital into apartments with construction beginning November of 2002. Now it has forty-two apartments, which are for senior citizens. It is located on 220 South Ijams Street.

The Garrett Community YMCA Community Center was opened in November of 2005. Some of the facilities offered in this community center are a gym, a workout room, childcare, a full size kitchen, and a before and after school fun club for children. Also there are three available community rooms that are available for rent, and an outside playground. Also the YMCA is planning on building an indoor pool. To raise money for this community center they had a fundraiser where a person could buy a brick with engravings on them for fifty dollars and Bingo. It is located at 1200 East Houston Street.

Thomas Taggart (1856-1929), Mayor of Indianapolis, Indiana, 1895-1901, lived in Garrett, 1874-1877, as manager of B&O Railroad depot restaurant.
Rollie Zeider (1883-1967), major league baseball player, 1910-1918, played for Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, Chicago Chi-Feds, Chicago Whales and Chicago Cubs. He ran a restaurant in Garrett after he retired from professional baseball.
