Gazelle Handicap
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gazelle Handicap is an American race for thoroughbred three-year-old fillies and was in its 110th renewal in 2005. The race is a Grade I stakes with a purse of $250,000, and run over one and one-eighth of a mile on the main dirt track at Belmont Park. The race is sometimes a stepping stone to the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
The first New York bred winner of an Eclipse Award, Saratoga Dew, won this race in 1992. That year she was Champion 3 Year-old filly. (Funny Cide is the only other New York bred to win the honor.)
Silverbulletday won the Gazelle in 1999, Desert Vixen in 1973, Susan's Girl in 1972, Twilight Tear in 1944, Vagrancy in 1942, Regret in 1917, Maskette in 1909, and Beldame in 1904.
The Gazelle was run at Gravesend Race Track from 1887 to 1916, at Aqueduct Racetrack from 1917 to 1955, in 1960, and from l962 to l968. It was not run from 1911 to 1916, nor from 1933 to 1935. Originally set at a mile and sixteenth from 1900 to 1958, it is not set at a mile in l959 and 1960. From 1917 through 1920, it was for three-year-olds and up.
