State Route 316 (also known as University Parkway, GA 316 or 316) links metro Atlanta with Athens, Georgia, home of the University of Georgia. The state route is 39.08 miles in length. Georgia 316 begins at Interstate 85 exit 106, near Lawrenceville, passing through Bethlehem, Georgia and Statham, Georgia and ending at State Route 10 Loop near Athens. Sections of Georgia 316 overlap sections of U.S. Highway 29, U.S. Highway 78, and State Route 8. The first five miles of the state highway is a freeway, but the rest of the route is at-grade with traffic signals.
316 is often considered to be a very dangerous road. The speed limit is posted at 55 mph (currently taken down to 45 mph during construction) between I-85 and the eastern terminus of the Lawrenceville city limts; and is posted at 65 mph between the eastern terminus of the Lawrenceville city limits to just west of Paul Broun Parkway (S.R. 10 Loop), but cars have been clocked at speeds in excess of 100 mph. State legislators have been in talks to upgrade the highway to interstate standards.
Currently, the Georgia Department of Transportation is upgrading the I-85 and S.R. 316 interchange. HOV lanes will be added from Pleasant Hill Road on I-85 to Buford Drive (S.R. 20). Lastly, estimates by GDOT have stated that the interchange will receive at least thirteen overpass bridges, rivaling Spaghetti Junction.
