Talk:Geography of Missouri
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Does it actually make sense to break down physical geography by artificial political borders? See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Ecoregions - the features you describe are different ecoregions, and have names given to them by ecologists.
- I think the comment about geography by state is valid, I'm also working on one for the U.S. Still, I am following the guidelines set up in the Wikipedia:WikiProject_U.S._States and the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Countries - sfmontyo
As far as terminology, the geography descriptions are coming from the 1911 encyclopedia britannica with some minor editing on my part. Please feel free to edit them as you wish.
The old encyclopedia info doesn't jive with the divisions that the state gives http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/areas/natareas/natural.htm also there was study done on Dialect and Heritage areas in Missouri done in the 1920's-1930's. It broke the State down into about 10 areas depending on the dialect (There are about 5 different dialects of English spoken in the state) or cultural heritage. A map of those the divisons can be found here Vernacular Architecture in Rural and Small Town Missouri (The Map is what you want to look at although the Vernacular Architecture article is very intersting. A portion of the WPA guide is here http://members.aol.com/hsauertieg/rt66/wpa_mo.htm You can order the full guide from Amazon here Amazon Linkand I think the senate website also has that guide for sale or at least mentions it here http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/WPAStateGuides.pdf. I think the WPA Guide is Public Domain but I'm not sure. I know for sure that the State Conservation article is not Public Domain and would hve to be rewritten if it is to be included.
