Gilbert S. Merritt, Jr.

Gilbert S. Merritt is an American jurist and Senior Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. A graduate of Yale University and Vanderbilt University Law School, he was appointed to the bench in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter. He earned an LLM from Harvard Law School in 1962. Prior to his appointment, Judge Merritt worked in both the public and private sectors, including service as the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee from 1966 to 1969.
He resides in Nashville, Tennessee and serves as an adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University Law School..
