From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glapwell is located in north east Derbyshire between the nearby towns of Chesterfield (7 miles) and Mansfield (5 miles) . Though the nearest town centre is that of Bolsover (3 miles to the north). It is a village of 1,467 residents, situated on a hill adjoining the village of Bramley Vale. The village has a local shop, post office and two pub / restaurants: The Young Vanish, (this unusual name was that of a 19th century champion race horse) and Ma Hubbards, (The renamed Glapwell Hotel), it also has a social club, The Rowthorne. Glapwell Garden Centre stands on the site of the former Glapwell Hall, the residence of the now extinct Jackson family. The village is recorded in the original Domesday book and it states that it has been a settlement since prehistoric times.
Glapwell colliery closed in the 1970s and now the Eve Trakway company owns the land. There is no overall dominant industry in the area, with most of the jobs being out of the village.
