Grinds (skateboarding)

Grinds are a form of skateboarding trick where the skateboarder slides on the hangers of the trucks. Grinds are performed on any object that may fit between the space between the wheels where the truck meets. They are commonly performed on handrails or the on lips of objects such as benches.

- 50-50 Grind
The 50-50 grind is where both trucks are on the rail.
- 5-0 grind
- Pronounced "Five-Oh". In this maneuver, the back truck grinds the rail/edge, while the front truck is suspended directly above the rail/edge. This move is similar to the manual, although the tail may be scraped against the obstacle as well as the back truck, which is not considered proper on a manual.
- Caveman
- A caveman like a bomb drop but on the flatground or into a grind/slide, it is simply holding your board in one hand, jumping into the air, landing on the board, and rolling away or down a rail. It was commonly used by street skaters in the mid to late 80's as a way to boardslide handrails that were otherwise unskateable. It can be combo'd with tricks like the manual but mostly on grind rails.
- Crooked grind
- Also called crooks, or the K-grind after the man to whom the trick is most commonly accredited, Eric Koston. It is like a nosegrind, but the tail of the board is angled away from the rail/ledge on which the trick is performed. Invented by Dan Paterka.
- Feeble grind
- In this maneuver, the back truck grinds a rail while the front truck hangs over rail's far side.
- Hawaii 5-0
- Frontside 5-0 grind to switch crooked grind. People who have popularized this trick include Daewon Song and Natas Kaupas.
- Hurricane
- A frontside 180 into a switch normal grind. This trick was popularized on vert by Tom Groholski and Steve Douglas. Many of today's pros also do it on street obstacles such as handrails and ledges. This trick is typically only performed backside.
- Losi Grind
- Popularized by Allen Losi. A Losi Grind is the equivelent of a feeble grind on the front truck. Also called "Nosefeeble"
- Nosegrind
- In a nosegrind, the skateboard's front truck grinds a rail or edge, while the back truck is suspended over the rail/edge. It is similar to the nose manual, except performed on a rail, coping, or ledge. Jamie Thomas is one of the few people who can balance a legitimate nosegrind down a lengthy handrail.
- Novacaine
- 180 ollie into a switch feeble grind, come out regular. Notable skateboarders to perform this are Mark Gonzales and Donny Barley.
- Overcrook grind
- Similar to the crooked grind only the tail of the board is angled beyond the rail/ledge being grinded, rather than away from it.
- Pole Jam
- Basically a 50-50 up a slanted pole. Its name is obvious from the fact of riding up a pole. Chris Haslam was one to specialize the Pole Jam by doing a Varial Kickflip at the end.
- Salad Grind
- This is very similar to the 5-0, but the front truck is suspended over the far side of the rail/edge the grind is performed on.. Like the "overcrook" grind is like a crooked nosegrind the Salad grind is like a crooked 5-0. This trick has been invented by Eric Dressen, hence the name (dressen, dressing, salad dressing).
- Smith grind
- This maneuver entails the back truck grinding an edge or rail, while the front truck hangs over the near side of the object. This trick was named after its inventor Mike Smith. It is considered by many to be the most difficult basic grind trick.
- Sugarcane
- Much the same idea as a Hurricane, except the board is turned more going in to the trick so the back wheels go over the lip first. A Sugarcane is to a Lipslide as a Hurricane is to a Boardslide.
- Suski Grind
- Popularized by Aaron Suski, a Suski grind involves the back truck grinding a rail or edge while the front truck is suspended over the near side of the object. Many believe it to be invented by Aaron Suski, but this is false. The trick was performed in many videos in earlier times. One early, notable performance of this trick was performed by Marcus McBride in the video "Trilogy" on the famous and now unskateable hubba hideout in 1996. The trick may be even older than that as it is sometimes done accidentally by skaters attempting to do a backside smith or tailslide.
- Willy Grind
- Popularized by Willy Santos, a Willy Grind involves the front truck grinding while the back truck is suspended down and away from the ledge or rail. It resembles that of a Smith grind, only reversed.
