Grunge music is a sub-genre of rock, and is sometimes referred to as the Seattle Sound. Popularized by bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains (sometimes collectively called The Big Four), grunge music has a worldwide burst in the early-mid 1990's. Grunge was a musical phenomenon which differed music of the 1990's from music of the 1980's.
Nirvana was a popular rock band from Aberdeen, Washington, United States. With the lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from their 1991 album Nevermind, Nirvana exploded into the mainstream, bringing along with it a subgenre of alternative rock called grunge. Other Seattle grunge bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden also gained in popularity, and, as a result, alternative rock became a dominant genre on radio and music television in the United States during the early-to-middle 1990s.
Eddie Vedder (born Edward Louis Seversen III on December 23, 1964) is the lead singer, and one of three guitar players for the grunge band Pearl Jam. He is notable for his deep baritone vocal style.

...Mark Arm of Mudhoney started a humourous band in 1981 named after his high school maths teacher, Mr. Epp and the Calculations. Their first 'show' was in the classroom singing a Marvin Gaye song with rolled up maps as guitars.
