Hallam F.C.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hallam Football Club are a football club in Sheffield, England, who currently play in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.
Founded in 1860, they are the second oldest football club in the world with Sheffield also being the home of the oldest club in the world, the Sheffield Club who were founded in 1857.
Hallam still play on their original ground, Sandygate Road, which is officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as "The Oldest Ground in the World". Sandygate is in western Sheffield. In 1861 Hallam first played the Sheffield Club in a local derby which is still contested today. This 'Sheffield' (note not 'Steel City') derby is considered the oldest contested derby (still going) of any football code, in the world. Therefore, it is probably one of the oldest organised team-sport derbies in the world, besides those found in cricket.
In 1867 the club made football history when they won the Youdan Cup, the world's first ever organised football tournament when they beat fellow Sheffield club Norfolk in the final played at Bramall Lane.
Hallam are now competing in the Northern Counties East League and its looking up. The 05/06 season wasn't exactly brilliant as Hallam finished 16th. A Christmas turn around stopped the rot and ended the season on a losing streak but with something to build on.
In the 06/07 Hallam got to the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and Quarter Finals of the NCEL League Cup. The season has been a success for all and one to remember. Brodsworth, Pickering and Eccleshill have been on the end of heavy defeats and it shows that if the coaching staff and players keep doing the business then 07/08 will be a success.
The hard working match reporter and website owner Thomas Jellis runs the highly successful www.hallamfc.co.uk and continues to give his up most to keep it going.
Thanks
