Talk:Halloween's Pursuit

Jesus Christ. Does the notion of something that nobody is sure is an ARG or a real-life event make no one else uncomfortable? Shades of Descartes' Demon. -Toptomcat 20:37, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
can you elaborate on this a little bit? i'm not familiar with that argument of logic beyond a simple overview, so i am hoping to better understand your point. _simplesimon.
Well, this presents itself as a treasure hunt, but may actually be an ARG. If more things in life were like that- presenting themselves as geniune experiences, but actually controlled by an unknown group- then life would be a great deal less sure. Did that beggar on the street approach you because he was starving, or because he was an actor in an elaborate scheme to test the public's generosity? Did a murder really occur on the cruise ship you're on, or is it part of an ARG to see who can find the 'killer' first? Did you really go to school, marry your wife, eat breakfast this morning without it being part of someone's secret plan (benign or sinister)? You can't know whether this is the case, and having things like this around make it more likely to be the case. ...*shiver* --Toptomcat 21:33, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
I see. Thanks a lot for the explanation. I totally agree that this sort of fundamental mystery is good at generating interest, but also has a certain disolving effect on essential assumptions of life. I have been interested in Halloween's Pursuit for about a year now, and this basic question (real or fake) has been the central point of contention. I myself think that it was the product of someone who loves puzzles, but wasn't working to promote a product or anything. So, there you find yourself trying to draw lines between what is a game, what is an "ARG", what is "real". for example, I have do doubt that the puzzles in the "game" were created by someone for the sake of being interesting puzzles, but does that neccesarily make it an ARG? Is it only "alternate reality" if it involves wild impossible plot lines? Anyways, all very interesting. Thanks for your thoughts. _simplesimon
