The Spiny dye-murex was the mollusk species used by the ancients to produce Tyrian purple fabric dye. The Banded dye-murex species was used to similarly produce a purple-blue indigo dye. In both cases the mollusks secrete the dye in a mucus from their hypobranchial glands.
