Hedge school
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A hedge school is a common name for local education in colonial Ireland. It came about as local educated men began an oral tradition of teaching the community. Although given the name 'hedge school' it is not in fact placed in a hedge row, but that of a house or barn. Such teachings included basic grammar, irish bardic tradition, latin, history and home economics. Currently, no hedge schools exist in Ireland due to the success of the Celtic Tiger.
