Heirs of Sverker dynasty
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The House of Sverker reigned Sweden intermittently between 1130 and 1222.
As usual with hereditary rulers, after the rival dynasty had got the final upper hand, this dynasty's descendants however regarded themselves as truer heirs of the kingdom. In 15th century, when Sweden elected a non-royally-descended king Charles VIII of Sweden (who attempted to fabricate his own pedigree to show him being descended from the Eric dynasty), the then Sverker heirs (chiefly, the Oxenstierna) attempted to get one of their own sons to elected in that place.
Sometimes, current monarchs of Sweden placated descendants of sverker dynasty with honours and even semi-independent fiefs, such as Magnus IV of Sweden giving Blekinge and Duchy of Halland to two rival heirs of Sverker dynasty in mid-1300s
Gustav I of Sweden (and his descendants of course) descended himself from Sverker dynasty through a cadet lineage, as did a number of Sweden's 15th-century Regents.
