Henry Wise Wood Senior High School was built in 1961 and is situated on 13.77 acres in the Southwest quadrant of the City of Calgary. The school is named after Henry Wise Wood, an Alberta pioneer who was instrumental in forming the Alberta Wheat Pool and the United Farmers of Alberta. Henry Wise Wood is regarded as an influential individual in Canadian agricultural and farming history.
The school prides itself as "the home of scholars, artists, and champions." The school motto is "Finis Coronat Opus," Latin for "The End Crowns the Work."
Academically, the school offers the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB) and the Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE), in addition to the full range of academic programs standard to the province.
Over the past few years, Henry Wise Wood has become a powerhouse in football, and both the senior and junior football teams won Division 1 City Championships in 2006. This is back to back championships for the junior boys, and most say that the juniors may win a third straight championship in 2007. The junior boys basketball team lost to St. Mary's Senior High School in Division 2 City Championships. The Senior girls, however, won the Division 2 City Championships.
