Hernán Padilla

Hernán Padilla (born 1938) was the chairman for the US Council for Puerto Rico Statehood (USCPRS) and was the founder of the Partido Renovación Puertorriqueño (Puerto Rican Renewal Party), which split from the pro-statehood New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico in 1983.
Elected as a member of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives in 1968, he served as Majority Leader during the 1969-72 term, and as Minority Whip from 1973-76. Padilla was mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico between 1977 and 1984 and served as President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. After 1984, he returned to medical practice as a nephrologist, serving at the National Capital Area for Kaiser Permanente. In 1991 he was the subject of one television advertisement by Kaiser that was regularly aired across the United States.
Padilla was born in Mayagüez and now lives in Miramar, Florida.Image:Hernan padilla.jpg
