Summary from Orange Public Library site: Crate label for Hewes' Transcontinental Brand, El Modena, California, ca. 1930. Label illustration shows train engine pulling boxcars along coastal landscape. Text on label reads "HEWES' TRANSCONTINENTAL / BRAND" across the top and "GROWN & PACKED BY / DAVID HEWES REALTY CORPORATION / EL MODENA, ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A." in lower left corner. Boxcars are labelled "PACIFIC / FRUIT EXPRESS" "VENTILATED / REFRIGERATION." A Sunkist logo with a lemon in a Sunkist wrapper is in the lower right corner. David Hewes (1822-1915) was a capitalist, philanthropist and land developer, and had a special interest in trains, having helped drive the golden spike that completed the Central Pacific Railroad. His Hewes packing house was in operation from 1903 until 1939.
