Talk:History of Monaco

[edit] WW2
What happened during WW2? Did Monaco have borders with Italy (which seized the Riviera), Vichy France or occupied France?
Did some of belligerant governments threaten with seizing Monaco?
Was it a hotspot of espionage? Refugees?
Did Monegasque troops fight? In which side?
I was wondering that same thing. It would seem odd that if, when all of France was occupied by the germans after the Normandy invasion, that Hitler would have left little Monaco alone.
Monaco was under Italian, then German occupation. See the article on Prince Louis II.
[edit] Name
Since the name goes to the Greek er, I gather that the fact that the Grimaldis disguised themselves as monks has no actual relation to the name. And hence the coat of arms is not armes parlant.
- Fact? The folk etymology, devised for a name that had become mysterious with time, spawned the explanatory myth, as happens all the time with Greek myths that "explain" archaic rites and things... and with many myths in other cultures, I'm sure. --Wetman 01:32, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] No mention of Menton and Roquebrune?
They are listed in main page but not in specialised subpage. Pavel Vozenilek 15:30, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
