Talk:Howie Day
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Is he really an alcoholic? That last line is a bit jarring. --BazDM 18:33, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm not sure if the man is an alcoholic. I was directed here from the famous Maine persons part of the wikipedia:Maine article. I am not sure how to approach this. I was drinking at a bar in Orono with him present, and watched him degrade a woman because he felt she was unattractive. He poured his drink on her. A good friend of mine proceeded to wrestle him and his "bodyguard" (some accomplice of considerable size) to the ground outside on the street, then stealing Howie Day's shoe.
Since it says I can't site my own research in an article, how do I put this in here? --Tom12384 06:18, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Tom12384
Whilst your story is interesting and I appreciate that you may want to share it with a wider audience, I'm afraid there's no concievable way it would be allowed to be included in Wikipedia yet. Without independent verification - a news article about the incident in a reputable paper, for example - it violates both the original research prohibition and could be considered libellous.
Knowing what we know of Day's behaviour whilst under the influence, the story does sound quite in character for him - perhaps a better bet would be to contact your local paper with the story. Idp 15:48, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] re: tom12384 (thats me)
If I approach a local paper with the story, then they report it, I can then cite it in wikipedia? That seems incredulous as (at least with my local paper) I doubt they have the committment to NPOV data and citing sources. They'd report it just for something interesting to say.
Would say, a police record of the incident (if one existed) be credible? For instance, if the smoking gun had an article on the matter? --Tom12384 17:56, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
What I mean is that a paper printing an allegation takes it from the territory of someone on Wikipedia making an accusation first hand. If the story was printed in a reputable publication - however true it may or may not be - it's then perfectly reasonable for Wikipedia to report that 'x paper alleged that on y date, Howie Day did z'. A police report would certainly be more credible when it comes to the veracity of the story, though. Idp 22:29, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying. No such luck on presenting this story in the article then. Hope you enjoyed it though; I got a good laugh watching him get thrown to the ground! --Tom12384 00:38, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Tom's right I've seen Howie doing some not-so-nice stuff here in Orono too but the local media worships him so you'd never get an article on it.

I promoted this article from its nomination as it is well-written and sourced. Two things that need attention, however. First, the lead image needs source information and a fair use rationale. Second, that Trivia section needs to go, both for being a trivia section and being one sentence long. Staxringold 14:56, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
- Cheers for taking the time to review the article :) In response to your concerns, I've incorporated the trivia section into the article proper and, more importantly, have replaced the lead image with an official promotional photo with fair use rationale. Thanks again! Idp 21:38, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

The references for this were not only broken links but sourced from a POV article which was in turn sourced from a forum post, so not a particularly valid reference. Have removed the entire line about this, as no more information or sources were given. Feel free to put it back if you feel it makes a valid point. Ukdmbfan 14:48, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
