Hypsophrys nicaraguensis is a cichlid of the family Cichlidae, the only member of its genus. It is a sexual dimorphic cichlid, in which unusually it is the female that is more brightly coloured. H. nicaraguensis inhabits slow moving lakes and rivers in Central America. Its main food items are insects and molluscs.
