I can't remember now... I believe there was a reason; something to do with questions regarding Commons' weird rules about the copyright status of the subject of an image (in this case, the data I used). I can't think of any reason right now that it couldn't be on commons, though. It may have just been that the original image was too large for Commons to accept, so after uploading it here I uploaded its smaller cousin (this image) here as well. -- mattb @ 2006-12-20T00:56Z

I tried to view the high-res version of the image but I all I get is a line of text with the file's URL and no image.

oh and another note, the image's "higher res" link lists it as 1280 x 1280 (which it is), but the file name is "Internet_map_1024.jpg" Nuriko 09:37, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

That was the original pixel width of the first version of the image, I didn't want to change the filename after it became used on several pages. -- mattb @ 2007-03-21T18:03Z

There's something wrong with the image (or Wikipedia). I've tried to view the image using different browsers, and I only get text of the filename or a broken image. I was at a friends tonight, and thought I'd try it there. Still broken. This seems to me to be a serious problem! Any idea what the comparatively large, centralized, balls of connections represent? Data centres? DSL vs. Cable Internet?

I understand that the data is referenced. But the process by which the data is converted to an image is not referenced; as far as I can tell, it's not disclosed at all. How can we verify that the referenced data was converted, processed, and mapped correctly? You can't even verify that the data itself was collected by the methods claimed, so this seems like an exercise in the pedantic. This image isn't intended to be a highly detailed diagram from which you can glean a lot of information, but more of an artistic interpretation of network routing that happens to be based on some real data. -- mattb @ 2007-03-31T17:48Z

The idea is that I don't see how you can really argue that an image constitutes original research if it is more decorative than functional. Diagrams, charts, and figures are something that concern NOR, not this. -- mattb @ 2007-03-31T17:59Z

One can tell where certain things are if one has the original data. However, the data was produced only by scanning class C network space, and about 2% of it at that. I'm not sure if Wikipedia's data centers are included on this map. -- mattb @ 2007-03-31T17:07Z
