Jacob Tome

Jacob Tome (b. August 13, 1810, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania - d. March 16, 1898, Port Deposit, Cecil County, Maryland) was an American philanthropist and founder of the Tome School.
He died of pneumonia on March 16, 1898, aged 87.
Jacob Tome arrived in Port Deposit Maryland a penniless man and left this world one as one of the richest men in the United States. He was Cecil County's first millionaire and it's greatest Philanthropist. His benevolence lives today in many institutions, Colleges churches and schools of learning.

His widow Evalyn Nesbitt Tome was the richest woman in the State of Maryland, later married Joseph Irwin France (Senator and Presidential candidate). Tome was born in York County, Pa., August 13, 1810. He was a Republican and a Member of Maryland state senate in 1864; was a candidate for Governor of Maryland, 1871. Died March 16, 1898. Buried at Hopewell Cemetery, Port Deposit, Md. His approximate wealth at the time of his death was 89 million dollars approximately 2.4 billion in today's money (2005).
