JAIST
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology or JAIST (北陸先端科学技術大学院大学 hokuriku sentan kagaku gijutsu daigakuin daigaku?) is a postgraduate university in Japan, established in 1990.
The university was established in the centre of Ishikawa Science Park (ISP) with a view of Hokuzan to the south. It has programs of governmental cooperation and several advanced research and development departments in science and technology. There are also two satellite campuses: the Tamachi Campus in Minato-ku, Tokyo, dedicated to Information Technology; and the Yaesu Campus in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, which has courses in Management of Technology (MOT). There are also satellite lectures in Kanazawa and Toyama, and JAIST aims to be the premier university in the entire area of West Japan (北陸 hokuriku?).
In the 21st Century Excellence Program, the "The Development and Practice of Technology based on Knowledge Science" (知識科学に基づく科学技術の創造と実践 chishiki kagaku ni motozuku kagaku-gijutsu no sōzō to jissen?) (2003), and the "Feasibility Evaluation of an Electronic Society" (検証進化可能電子社会 kenshō shinka kanō denshi shakai?) (2004) central program that was adopted by the Information Technology Department are expected to bear fruit.
The university was originally planned to be a daughter institute of Keiōdai in the Kantō area, but it was later opened in Ishikawa Prefecture to curry favour with the minister of education at that time, Yoshiro Mori, who was born in Ishikawa. While in Japanese the institute's name only mentions West Japan (北陸 hokuriku?), the institute's English name contains "Japan" to indicate the international scope of its research interests.
