[edit] Background and military career
Björklund was born in Skene, Mark Municipality, Västra Götaland County, the son of a Swedish father and a Norwegian mother who escaped to Sweden as a war refugee in 1944. Björklund served as an officer in the Swedish Armed Forces from 1982 to 1994. He started as an Officer Cadet at Älvsborg Regiment (I 15) in Borås and later became a Major at the Life Guards (Swedish: Livgardet) in Stockholm.
[edit] Political career
Björklund early engaged in the Liberal Youth of Sweden, the youth wing of the Liberal People's Party. He served as Chairman of the South Älvsborg district in the early 1980s and as 2nd Vice Chairman of the organisation from 1985 to 1987. He was elected to the board of the Liberal People's Party as a representant of the youth league in 1987 and as an independent in 1990. He then engaged in Stockholm local politics and served as Oppositional Vice Mayor (Swedish: oppositionsborgarråd) in Stockholm Municipality from 1994 to 1998 and again from 2002 to 2006. From 1998 to 2002 he served as Vice Mayor with responsibility for schools (Swedish: skolborgarråd). He was elected 2nd Vice Chairman of the Liberal People's Party in 1997 and 1st Vice Chairman in 2001.
As vice chairman of his party, Björklund supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq and urged for Swedish participation in the "coalition of the willing".[1]
In October 2006, when a new Swedish centre-right government under Fredrik Reinfeldt was formed, Jan Björklund was appointed Minister for Schools.
