Jan De Maesschalck
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jan De Maesschalck is a Belgian painter. He was born in 1958 in St. Gilles-Waas (BE) and lives and works in Stekene (BE). His paintings are representations of current events or topical subject, always in a tender, yet humorous way. His paintings are very intimate, not only because of their proportions, also because of what they depict: shadowy interiors and forlorn women are two of his beloved subjects. Whether it is a woman reading or a depiction of a couch, De Maesschalck's paintings always represent moments of utter silence, of indefinable desire, of loneliness. According to the artist, melancholy leads to beauty. His technique contributes to the atmosphere of the work. With an extreme eye for detail he draws on paper with paint. Utilizing acrylic paint that dries instantly, De Maesschalck has to work fast. He is a drawer and a painter at once. De Maesschalck works with several Belgian magazines and prominent newspapers, such as De Morgen, De Financieel Economische Tijd and <H>art that publish his work on a weekly basis.
