Japan-Taiwan Relations

Japan-Taiwan relations are guided by 1972 Japan-China Joint Communique, and Japan maintains non-governmental, working-level relations with Taiwan ever since.

[edit] Joint Communique

Shocked by US President Richard Nixon's visit to People's Republic of China in 1972 based on US interest in Sino-Soviet split with the release of Joint Communique of the United States of America and the People's Republic of China (Shanghai Communique), soon after, Japan, which was led by Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka's Liberal Democratic Party, decided to establish formal diplomacy with PRC.

According to 1972 Japan-China Joint Communique, The Government of Japan fully understands and respects that Taiwan is an inalienable territory of People's Republic of China, and it firmly maintains this stand under Article 8 of the Postsdam Proclamation.

With regard and in line with the Article 8 of the Postdam Proclamation, which states " The terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out and Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to the islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku and such minor islands as we determine. "

By recognizing People's Republic of China, Japan nullifies Treaty of Taipei in relation to Republic of China.

In the 1998 Japan-China Joint Declaration On Building a Partnership of Friendship and Cooperation for Peace and Development, which states " The Japanese side continues to maintain its stand on the Taiwan issue which was set forth in the Joint Communique of the Government of Japan and the Government of the People's Republic of China and reiterates its understanding that there is one China. Japan will continue to maintain its exchanges of private and regional nature with Taiwan. "

In order to attract more tourists from overseas to Japan, Japan permits Taiwan tourists visa exemption for a period of 90 days commenced on September 20, 2005.

In the press conference on January 31, 2006, Deputy Press Secretary Tomohiko Taniguchi announced that, in a speech, Minister of Foreign Affairs Taro Aso expressed concern on peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait on the basis of 1972 Japan-China Joint Communique.
