Jerry Michael Brady (born March 20, 1936 in Idaho Falls, Idaho) is an Idaho politician and media executive. He was the 2006 Democratic nominee for Governor of Idaho. On November 7, 2006, Brady lost the general election to Republican Congressman Butch Otter, 52%-44%.
Brady is a 1954 graduate of Idaho Falls High School, a 1958 honors graduate of the University of Notre Dame and a 1962 graduate of the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley.
Beginning in 1963 Brady served as a legislative assistant to United States Senator Frank Church. From 1969 to 1972 he was assistant director and later director of public affairs for the Peace Corps. Brady practiced law in Washington, D.C. from 1979 to 1984.
In 1984 Brady returned to Idaho to manage his family's media companies, first as general manager of KIFI-TV in Idaho Falls, then as publisher of the Post Register, Idaho Falls' daily newspaper. Brady currently serves as the newspaper's president.
In 2002 Brady won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, but lost the general election to Republican incumbent Dirk Kempthorne despite a narrow win in Ada County, the state's most populous. [1]. Brady won the 2006 nomination against token opposition, but lost to Republican Congressman C. L. "Butch" Otter in the general election. Brady, who is, like Otter, a Roman Catholic, would have become the second Catholic governor of Idaho, succeeding Gov. Jim Risch, who is the state's first.
Brady is the great grandson of James H. Brady, who served as Governor and United States Senator from Idaho in the early 20th century.
