John Cabot CTC
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Cabot CTC is one of 15 City Technology Colleges that first opened for students in the 1993/1994 academic year. It is located slightly to the north of Bristol in the Kingswood area and is named after John Cabot, an explorer who set out from Bristol and discovered the Americas in 1497.
The College has approximately 1100 students, about 220 of whom are in the sixth form. It has recently built a new £1.4 million 'Study Centre' constructed with environmentally friendly materials and methods specifically for the sixth form pupils. It was opened officially on Monday 6th December 2004 by Mr Colin Green, President of Defence Aerospace at Rolls Royce.
The current Principal is David Carter.
The government has recently been encouraging CTCs to become part of the City Academy Scheme. Thirteen of the fifteen CTCs nationwide are going to convert to City Academies by the end of the 2007/2008 academic year, and John Cabot is one of them.
In year 7, the College operates the Cabot Competency Curriclum, which was developed at the college. It is all about learning to learn, and is a whole new curriclum and a whole new way of teaching.

[edit] Academic achievement
For the 2002/2003 academic year, it achieved an 84% pass rate of A*-C grades at GCSE. The following academic year, 64.1% of GCSE results were A*-C. 2005/06 show a marked increase in GCSE results with 75% of students attaining A*- C grades.
[edit] Term system and school day
The school runs on a 5-term system, each of around 6-9 weeks, with 1 or 2 weeks of holiday in between.
The School day has recently changed, as expected. It now ends at 3.35pm and starts at the same time of 8.30am.
[edit] "Student Voice"
The school has a "Student Voice" system (Run mainly by the Principal, David Carter), set up at the beginning of the Academic year 2005-2006, which allows the students to give their opinions on issues related to the school, such as sanctions and rewards, and the construction of new buildings. One student from each tutor group is chosen each term, which (For those in Year 7 when it began) should mean each student is picked at least once. The chosen student becomes the representative of their tutor group, collecting opinions from their classmates to relay to the meeting.
A new topic is usually chosen each term. There are two meetings, the first is like a brief, in which the representatives are informed as to the current topic, and the second is the collection of data (and often a vote, in the case of multiple decisions, eg: The new buildings from the grant).
[edit] Trivia
The college scenes from E4 teen comedy/drama series 'Skins' were filmed at John Cabot CTC, and is currently attended by one of the show's stars, Larissa Wilson who plays Jal Fazer.
