Joseph Enseling

Joseph Enseling (born 28 November 1886 in Coesfeld, Westphalia,died 16 July 1957 in Dusseldorf, Germany) was a german sculptor.
Apprenticeship 1905-1910 Arts and Crafts School (Kunstgewerbeschule) Dusseldorf. His teachers have been, among others, Rudolf Bosselt, Wilhelm Kreis and Peter Behrens. He has been a student of Aristide Maillol from 1910 until 1912 at the Academy Colarossi Paris. After the First World War Enseling has been a member of the Dusseldorf Artists Community (Kuenstlervereinigung)"Das Junge Rheinland". 1913 until 1952 he was professor and lecturer at the Folkwangschool, Essen and at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art (Kunstakademie). Besides educational work he was active as a freelance artist until his death in 1957.
Enseling worked in stone, wood, bronce and ceramic. He created numerous monumental sculptures, architectural and industrial statues in the Rhine-Ruhr region of Westphalia. Many of his works are reminiscent of the area's industrial-cultural heritage of the 1920`s and 30`s. Furthermore many expressionistic portraits from personalities of this time are conserved. As well he was creating many memorials honouring the fallen soldiers of WW1. His life-work consist of female busts and masks with deep, emotional expressions. German and foreign museums are exhibiting many of Enselings sculptures. Some of his students have been Hermann Blumenthal and the young Joseph Beuys.
