Kane Gang was a blue-eyed soul trio from North East England that had a few UK hits and one U.S. hit in the 1980s. They named themselves after the movie, Citizen Kane.
Vocalists Martin Brammer (b. c. 1958, in Seaham, County Durham) and Paul Woods and multi-instrumentalist Dave Brewis formed the trio in 1982, after meeting in small local bands, and signed to a small record label, which led to a deal with London Records in 1984.
Their debut album, Bad and Lowdown World of the Kane Gang (released in the U.S. as Lowdown), was released the next year, and spawned two UK hit singles, "Closest Thing To Heaven" (#12), and "Respect Yourself" (#21). The latter was also a hit in Australia, reaching #19.
The band's next album, Miracle, released in 1987, spawned two U.S. hit singles, "Motortown" (#36) (#45 UK), and "Don't Look Any Further" (#64) (#52 UK).
Woods left the band in 1991 to attempt a solo career. he only wrote 2 songs: going down the highway, which peaked at numer 567 in the charts, and the greens, which didnt chart at all.
When Woods left on a solo career, he and Brewis worked on a album which was never released.
Brammer continues to write songs for other artists such as Tina Turner, Lighthouse Family, James Morrison, Nick Carter.
[edit] Trivia
- The Kane Gang are infamous for writing the 'Ooh Gary Davies...on your radio' jingle for BBC Radio 1.
- The music for the 'Ooh Gary Davies...on your radio' jingle, was then used as the basis for the theme tune of longrunning Children's BBC Byker Grove, the very show that launched the careers of Ant and Dec (as PJ & Duncan), and Donna Air.
