Kirkbie Kendal School

Kirkbie Kendal School is a Business and Enterprise College in Kendal, Cumbria, England, and serves the area around the town and rural countryside. Kirkbie Kendal School operates as a Foundation school, and has been regularly oversubscribed, accepting students based on a designated hierarchy.^[1] The school had 1,005 pupils on roll, ages 11-18.^[2]

As a Business and Enterprise College status, Kirkbie Kendal School focuses on raising levels of attainment in business studies and related courses, mathematics and information technology. The school works with local businesses, colleges and universities to provide students with the skills needed to progress into higher or further education and employment or entrepreneurship.^[3]

The school has taken steps to alert students and parents to potential dangers of social networking websites, after an incident of cyber-bullying involving students at the school.^[4]^[5]

Kirkbie Kendal School dates back to 1525, when it was founded as the Kendal "Free Schole". The school was known as Kendal Grammar School and was located adjacent to the Parish Church from from 1588 - 1889. In 1889, the School moved into a new building which is now the school's main block. Kendal High School for Girls opened in 1890. In 1980, the two schools merged to form Kirkbie Kendal School.^[6]

The entrance building is over 600 years old. The school was originally on a different site, but is now near Lakes Leisure Kendal[1], recently called Kendal Leisure Centre. It has had many recent extensions, including a new hall, maths and ICT buildings, and an all-weather sports pitch on the Cinderovens site, which is adjacent to the school. Originally an all boys school, girls were taught on a different site until both branches were eventually merged into one with the previous girls' site being abandoned.

In 1980 the school became known by its current name, and commemorative mugs were issued to all pupils and staff on the 25th anniversary of this event, which was 2005.

In 2003, Kirkbie Kendal School was one of 14 schools in the North-East and Cumbria that were awarded specialist status by the Department for Education and Skills, entitling the school to its share of more than pounds 2m worth of investment.^[7]

A team from the school won the regional final of the Institute of Physics 2004 Paperclip Physics Competition. The Kirkbie Kendal School team was recognized from among six finalists for its efforts in explaining concepts of density and buoyancy.^[8]^[9]

A student at the school was one of 25 regional winners in the 2006 Audi Innovation Awards competition, a national design competition for students ages 11–14. Over 4,000 entries were submitted to the competition from more than 200 schools.^[10]

For 2006, Kirkbie Kendal School was the North East Regional winner of the Charter Standard Secondary School award for outstanding achievement in providing football opportunities for their students.^[11] The school was also recognized in 2004.^[12]
