The Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri, held in Kishiwada, Osaka, is perhaps the most famous Danjiri Matsuri (lit. "decorative portable shrine festival") in Japan.

Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri began in 1703 when the feudal lord of Kishiwada, Okabe Nagayasu (岡部 長泰) prayed at Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto to Shinto gods for an abundant harvest.

The city has 82 large wooden carts/floats (山車), each holding a portable shrine, danjiri (hiragana: だんじり kanji:檀尻; 楽車; 屋台).

Starting in 2006, Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri is now held on the Saturday and Sunday before Respect for the Aged Day, now the third Monday of September as a result of the Happy Monday System.
