KNBN, channel 21, is the NBC affiliate in Rapid City, South Dakota. The station signed on the air on May 14, 2000. It is owned by Rapid Broadcasting, and is also the sister station to two low-powered outlets in Rapid City, KKRA-LP and KWBH-LP. KNBN's transmitter is located in Rapid City.
KNBN can also be seen on translator K40GS on UHF channel 40; licensed in Rapid City, K40GS mainly serves Lead and the Black Hills region.
Despite transmitting its analog signal on UHF channel 21, KNBN identifies as NewsCenter1 or NBC1 on air. This is because they used to broadcast on cable channel 1 on coverter boxes issued by the cable company. KNBN now is carried on the local cable systems on channel 10.
[edit] Digital television
Because it was granted an original construction permit after the FCC finalized the DTV allotment plan on April 21, 1997 [1], the station did not receive a companion channel for a digital television station. Instead, on or before February 18, 2009, which is the end of the digital TV conversion period for full-service stations, KNBN will be required to turn off its analog signal and turn on its digital signal (called a "flash-cut").
