KToon is a free software/open source 2D animation Toolkit designed by Colombian Toonka Films for animators, and released under the GNU General Public License. KToon is only available for Unix-like systems (such as GNU/Linux), but development of a Windows version is likely.
The project began in 2002 as a way to stimulate Latin American interest in animation. Most other currently available animation software is proprietary, and not available to many people.
In 2003, Colciencias, a Colombian governmental organisation created for national scientific stimulation, agreed to supply financial support for the project.
KToon is designed to function in a similar way to popular proprietary animation packages, like Macromedia Flash. It currently lacks a scripting language like Macromedia's ActionScript, but it can export movies as AVI files and Flash animations.
