Kula Ridge

The Kula Ridge was an ancient mid-oceanic ridge that existed on the Pacific Ocean floor during the Jurassic period. The Kula Ridge lay south of the Hawaiian hotspot around 80 million years ago, moving northward relative to the hotspot. There was a small piece of this ridge off the Pacific Northwest 43 million years ago. The rest of the ridge has since been subducted beneath Alaska.
When the Kula Ridge was in the area where Washington and Oregon are now, basalt erupted there. Some of that rock is now part of the Olympic Peninsula.
