Kushiel's Chosen is a historical fantasy or alternate history by Jacqueline Carey.
In the novel, the journey of famed anguissette Phèdre nó Delaunay continues, bringing her all the way to Caerdiccia Unitas, chasing after the path of Melisande Shahrizai, the best-known traitoress in Terre d'Ange. But also, the curse of her one true friend haunts her, and she has a long way to go if she will ever have the chance to free him from the curse that should have been hers. It is all she can do to keep madness at bay as her blood-guilt slowly drives her to insanity.

Kushiel's Dart, the first book in the trilogy Kushiel's Legacy, ends with the arrival of a mysterious gift at Montrève, the Comtesse's quiet country estate. Kushiel's Chosen picks up from there as an Italian merchant and former acquaintance presents a surprised Phèdre with her cloak of sangoire, last worn when she was betrayed by Melisande Shahrizai, the deadly but beautiful and manipulative scion of Kushiel. She takes it upon herself to find out how Melisande escaped from Troyes-le-Mont, the fortress featured during the climatical fight of Kushiel's Dart. Along with her chevaliers, Remy, Fortun and Ti-Phillipe, and her protector Joscelin Verreuil, the former Cassiline brother, Phèdre returns to the City of Elua, capital of Terre d'Ange to resume her life as a Servant of Naamah.
Her later travels bring her to the Caerdiccian city-state of La Serenissima where her exploits and efforts to track down the missing guardsmen of Troyes-le-Mont eventually bring her to Prince Benedicte de la Courcel and his young D'Angeline wife, who is revealed as Melisande. Phèdre's untimely discovery sends her off to the volcanic isle of La Dolorosa, where she is imprisoned until an escape that finds her on an Illyrian ship. Her travels further on take her to Illyria and Kriti as she tries to send word back to Marsilikos and the City of Elua. Meanwhile, Joscelin is bereft but busies himself with his continuing fascination with the Yeshuites and their prophecies of their own state in the north, training them in the Cassiline way of fighting. Eventually, Phèdre finds her trail back to La Serenissima, thwarts the attempt on the life of Ysandre de la Courcel, Queen of Terre d'Ange and rushes back to the City of Elua in Queen Ysandre's retinue to prevent the taking of the city by the Duc Percy de Somerville, scion of Anael.
The novel ends with Phèdre finally making Joscelin her formal consort.
